How to Calculate Cuplock Scaffolding Quantity
Cuplock scaffolding is used to support slabs and beams while concrete sets. Before you order, you need four numbers: how many verticals, how many ledgers, and how many base jacks and U jacks. This guide shows the simple method, with a worked example.
Step 1: Fix the grid spacing
Cuplock verticals stand in a grid under the slab. The distance between them is the length of the ledger you use. Buildrich ledgers come in 0.5, 1, 1.2, 1.5, 2 and 2.5 m. Your engineer chooses the spacing for your slab.
Step 2: Count the standing points
Standing points along the length = length ÷ spacing + 1. Do the same for the width. Multiply the two.
Standing points = (L ÷ s + 1) × (W ÷ s + 1)
Step 3: Count the verticals
At each standing point, add vertical pieces to reach the floor height (after allowing for the base jack and U jack). Buildrich verticals come in 3, 2.5, 2, 1.5, 1 and 0.5 m, so you can combine lengths. Total verticals = standing points × pieces per point.
Step 4: Count the ledgers
If there are R rows and C columns of standing points, ledgers per level are:
Ledgers per level = R × (C − 1) + C × (R − 1)
Multiply by the number of ledger levels your engineer specifies.
Step 5: Base jacks and U jacks
One base jack at the bottom and one U jack at the top of every standing point. Buildrich jacks come in 350, 450 and 600 mm lengths.
Worked example
Slab size 12 m × 9 m, grid spacing 1.5 m (example only), 2 ledger levels, one vertical piece per point.
| Item | Calculation | Quantity |
|---|---|---|
| Points along 12 m | 12 ÷ 1.5 + 1 | 9 |
| Points along 9 m | 9 ÷ 1.5 + 1 | 7 |
| Standing points | 9 × 7 | 63 |
| Verticals | 63 × 1 | 63 |
| Ledgers per level (1.5 m) | 7 × (9 − 1) + 9 × (7 − 1) | 110 |
| Ledgers for 2 levels | 110 × 2 | 220 |
| Base jacks | 1 per point | 63 |
| U jacks | 1 per point | 63 |

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the number of cuplock verticals?
Count the standing points: (length ÷ grid spacing + 1) × (width ÷ grid spacing + 1). Then multiply by the number of vertical pieces needed to reach the floor height.
How many ledgers are needed per level?
For a grid of R rows and C columns of standing points: R × (C − 1) + C × (R − 1) ledgers per level. Multiply by the number of ledger levels.
How many base jacks and U jacks do I need?
One base jack and one U jack for every standing point.
What grid spacing should I use?
The grid spacing depends on slab thickness and load. Your structural engineer decides it. Buildrich ledgers come in 0.5, 1, 1.2, 1.5, 2 and 2.5 m, so the grid usually matches one of these lengths.
Can Buildrich calculate the quantity for my site?
Yes. Send your slab area, floor height and drawing on WhatsApp to 99230 73303. Our technical team prepares the material estimation and erection drawing and sends a quote.
